Stunning piece, even if the frescoes have been restored! Apr 15, 2011
Constructed in the latter half of the twelfth century, this is quite an iconic baptistery in Emilia-Romagna. The façade is shaped with eight sides and decked in a rather unique-looking pink marble which was shipped from nearby Verona. Inside the frescoes are perhaps the most detailed and amazing that can be found in the region. Christ is there of course, along with Mary, the apostles and various other bishops that must have a connection to the region. For the true art critic, I suppose these aren’t frescoes in the true sense. They have cracked and peeled away over the year, and have consequently been the subject of heavy restoration. Despite this, I’m glad that such efforts were made as the inside is still very breathtaking. You pay a few Euros to get inside, and get a discounted deal if you pay upfront from 2 or 3 of Parma’s religious sights. Worth going to for sure if you are in Parma.
