An amazing feast for the eyes! Apr 10, 2011
I can’t believe that entrance into this baptistery is free, or maybe that’s a good thing, so that more people are attracted to the sight. Constructed around the fourth or fifth century, this building was connected to a basilica which was destroyed in the eighteenth century. The sight lays on top of some ancient roman baths, and parts of this are visible by accessing the steps that lead you down there. Inside the mosaics are remarkably well preserved. In the centre, Christ is being baptised in the Jordan by John the Baptist. All of the twelve apostles are depicted surrounding the scene too. At eye and ground level, there is nothing to see. Although this seems like a shame, it’s great to see the main mosaics there and if anything, it attracts them more attention. I can really see why this is registered on UNESCO’s world heritage sites list.
