The city of Banská Bystrica is located in central Slovakia. Banská Bystrica is the most important historical, cultural and economic centre of the central Slovakia. It is a seat of administration of the Banská Bystrica Region, one of the 8 regions of the Slovak Republic. The first written reference about the city is from the year 1255. Today Banská Bystrica has 81281 inhabitants.
I visited in early October, 2007 and found this charming city to be an undiscovered Jewel! The main square is absolutely wonderful. It's sparkling clean and restored and a joy to walk around. At night it comes alive with restaurants and bars and people. I wish I had more time to discover the area around here. The people I met here were truly helpful. Several people in a shop overheard me speaking English and came over to see if they could help. Perhaps they were eager to practice.
