This is Phil, and I'm back on the road. I plan on visiting Ecuador, Peru, a tiny bit of Brazil, and then Colombia over 24 days. I've got no real plans, but I do want to visit the Amazon and do a cruise on the river. The Galapagos would be nice, but it's a very expensive destination from what I hear, so maybe not. I fly home from Medellin, Colombia on February 8th, so it's good fun until then!

1 Continent. 10 Countries. 152 Days. 2000 Dollars. Millions of Memories. My South American Adventure begins Dec 2007 and ends April 2008. I am pretty much traveling alone and winging it. But one thing's for sure- it's gonna be one hell of a trip.

KERRY - After a hair raising bus journey past some sheer drops and winding turns, we arrived in Baños. This town is much smaller than Riobmamba, thank god, and much more friendly. We trudged up the hill to a hostel that had been recommended to us - Princessa Maria- and unloaded our bags. It was a nice place, and very cheap at $5 a night each in a room with an TV and an on suite bathroom! We seemed to have been allocated the noisiest room in the place though, so maybe that was why i...

Banos

The word "Banos" in Espanol actually means "baths" and so it was, that we arrived in Banos, a town full of thermal springs, a helluva lot of tourist agencies, some great cafes and one not so nice cafe! Besides the New Town in Quito, Banos was the most touristy place we had been to so far in Ecuador. There were plenty of great hostels, plenty of great places to eat, plenty of tourist agencies, plenty of massage palours and spas and with its spectacular location in a valley at the bottom ...

From Quito, to Banos and then surfing on the Pacific! Ecuador uses the US $, and for less than 300 you can jump off bridges, rappel off waterfalls, learn to surf, eat like a king.....the list goes on. The most amazing trip ever!

Baños-close to the jungle
posted by:

Got to Baños, a tropical area close to volcanoes and the jungle at about 8 PM, went to about 4 different hostals, all full, got frustrated before finally finding a place, walked around to check out the jungle tours and other stuff to do around town. Met up wtih 2 others signing up to do a canyoning tour, AKA repelling down waterfalls the next day (Rainforestur, 25 bucks) Got some food, headed to the hostal. July 9th: Woke up pretty early to get to the tour agency at 9:00. Went with a gro...

Baños is ... lovely but wet
posted by:

Have now spent a couple of days chilling out in Banos and recommend it as a very good place to come to reacclimatise to normal life after weeks spent in the jungle.  I can sleep in a proper bed, eat nice food (icecream, cheese etc - luxury) and not have to worry about the threat of biting insects of any sort! Today and yesterday I started out on walks which ended up accidently taking much longer than intended!  Baños is a small town set in a valley between steep hills on eith...

The Nun and The Porn

It seems as though we write about our bus rides often, but we spend so much time in transit and we're in such close quarters with people that we see ourselves forced to write about it. And as anyone who has spent some time in South America knows, South Americans love to travel on buses so buses are always pretty full. On this particular ride from Quito to Baños, there was a nun who sat diagonally from us. Nuns, for whatever reason, make Em really uncomfortable so she was aware and ...
