Bank of Ireland - old Irish Parliament Jan 28, 2011
Banks around the globe often take up residence in impressive buildings in the centre of cities. But only a few of the buildings housing banks can compare with the Bank of Ireland building on College Green in Dublin - next to Trinity College.
This building used to house the old Irish Parliament until it was abolished by the act of union agreement from 1800. It was sold to the Bank of Ireland with the condition the building could never again be used as a parliament.
The building original design of the building was later used as a model for the other buildings around the world most notably the USA Capitol in Washington.
Today most of the building is used by the banks daily business and most of the building is off limits to regular visitors. But you can go in and have a look at a couple of the rooms in the building. One of the places you can see is the main hall for the bank - it is a big room with a very high sealing - unfortunately it is use for the banks regular business so they don't like tourist flashing their camera around for security reasons.
The only place you can really explore is the old meeting hall for the Irish House of Lords. As part of the agreement when the bank bought the building they were obliged to open at least one room for the general public during banking hours. So today everybody can go in and have a look inside this old room.
In the centre of the room is a big table and to the sides of the tables is two tapestries showing scenes from the Irish history - one of them of the Battle of the Boyne.
With free access during banking hours it is well worth doing the short detour from the Trinity College just next door. Supposedly they should be doing informative tours of the room on Thursdays but I did not attend one so I am not sure about this.
