Bangor today has a population of well over 55,000 and has become a seaside dormitory town for Belfast, 12 miles to the west along Belfast Lough. The town has a long and cultured history, being the site of a large outward looking monastery. The Abbey was founded by Saint Comgall in 558 A.D., a century or so after the advent of Saint Patrick. Monks or abbots from here went on missions into western and central Europe and re-introduced christianity after the so-called dark ages.
Most famous as a prosperous holiday resort, Bangor grew massively with the arrival of cheap rail transport, the fashion of sea swimming promoted by British royals and the need for social and recreational distractions for the huge working class population of industrial Victorian Belfast.
Popular for over a hundred years, the troubles and the growth of car ownership and foreign holidays saw the end of the holiday business. After lean times the town is now a busy entertainment centre with pubs and night clubs, golf clubs, hotels and world class marina. Situated on the shores of Belfast Lough and the Irish Sea Bangor is a homely and busy Ulster town.
