Eids in Bangladesh By Aminul Mohaimen The two Eids (Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha) are the main festivals of Bangladeshis. Nothing impacts the whole nation with the same extent and magnitude as the two Eids. They also contribute in maintaining social and family bondage, help establish equity between poor and rich, and play a very important role in the cultural and literary development of the country.Eid-ul-Fitr comes after month long fasting of the holy Ramadan. Bangladesh has 834 people per square kilometre, according to a 2001 census of the country, population of 144 million people, making it one of the most crowded in the world. I met one carpenter Salim Hossen Gaus from southwestern Jessore district. This Bangladeshi man that has come up with a novel idea to get away and escape from life’s pressures. Everyday he winches himself 30m (100 feet) in a precarious homemade pulley to a small wooden platform at the top of a palm tree. He built the ...

Work brings me to Dhaka.. Weather is not so good here, was informed that it is monsoon season so I'm here in my hotel room watching the semi-finals of the Roland Garros writing this blog that will remind me or my first impression of the city.  This blog is basically for me =)I know that this is one of the poorest countries in the world, but when I stepped in the International airport, the first thing I've noticed is that their airport looks so much better than the ones in New Delhi (whic...

Yes - you can travel from Dhaka/ Bangladesh to Kolkata/ India by AC BUS, fare would be around 10/11 dollar inclusive on board refreshements. It may take around 10 hrs to complete the journey, that includes some breaks in between in the total journey for customs, immigration, meals etc. On board service quality is good and bus staff are friendly. Adventure seekers and budget travelers may try the journey.

The Rocket, one of the four ageing paddle-steamers that travel from the Sadar ghat in Dhaka, the capital, along the arterial waterways of southern Bangladesh to Khulna and back. There are six departures a week by Rocket to Dhaka.  Arriving by cycle-rickshaw in the night from our hotel ($2), we realize the Rocket is 2 hours late (surprise) and we will have to wait.  Just then, there is a flash, then all the lights go out!! The time goes by quite quickly and we&nbs...

Crossing the Indian - Bangladesh border near Siliguri (India) was my first experience of being a genuine VIP (Very Important Person), both the Indian and Bangladesh border guards gave all the egards to me if I were the Queen of Holland myself (which would involve a desperate sex changing operation). They offered me soooo many cups of tea that my bladder almost exploded. The Bangladeshi border officials even arranged an authentic rickshaw ride on a tricycle cart to the next town which make me ...

We started seeing the effects of green and red in the sky but were unable to snap it. Then it started becoming red and bright. The sun started going up. Lush greenery becoming visible all around. The color of the blue sky started making the water pure blue and the place became blissful and the sand sparkly. Pure BlueThe color of the blue sky started making the water pure blue ...
