Bangkok to Koh Phangan Reviews
Cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Koh Phangan Feb 20, 2012
Hello fellow budget travellers.
This may not be the easiest way to get from Bangkok to the full moon party island of Koh Pha Ngan but it is easily the cheapest and you will definitly meet some interesting people and see how the locals do it.
It is far easier and more comfortable to take a vip bus package down to the island but you don't get to see and experience as much.
First take bus 53 if you are staying near Koh San Road to the bus station for 7B.
There is a 7-11 across the street from the train station to buy some drinks (water, Sang Som, Changs whatever) and snacks. There is also some great food stalls here. I would eat as much as you can because the train food isn't all that great.
Then buy a 3rd class ticket for a train leaving between 6:30PM and 9 PM (these times get you to Surat Thani at a good time in the morning). Don't worry about the looks of confusion you will get from the ticket agent and assure him/her that you indeed do want a 3rd class ticket (it isn't that bad). The 2nd class seat with A/C get really, really cold at night. The third class gets chilly but not freezing. The seats are only padded benches that do not recline so those with bad backs are not advised to do this). This ticket will cost you 217B for the 9 hour journey.
Once on the train stay there isn't that much to see but you do save a nights accomadation by taking the overnight train.
Once at the Surat Thani stop I would eat again and then look for the local bus to the town proper. Just ask around which bus it is (sorry I didn't record the number). Once on the bus tell the driver you are going to the pier and they will drop you off at a small bus stop where you can buy a bus ticket to Donsak pier for 100B and a ferry ticket for 200B or 250B with Raja Ferry Port.
After the two and a half hour ferry ride hopefully you made some friends and when you arive at the pier you can share a truck to Haad Rin for 50 to 100B each.
