Half a well is better than no well at all Feb 05, 2017
Well, it did not take me more than a few seconds to get to Lukang Gate as my guest house was only 10 meters away, and would have been inside the old city at one time. During the Qing Dynasty gates were built in the town's lanes as a defense against thieves and pirates. The gate dates from 1830 and is the only remaining old gate in the city. There is an inscribed board embedded above the gate, which hopes for heavy traffic which symbolises the prosperity of the city. There are granite pillars each side with the rest of the gate made from red bricks. Originally there were two doorways, one small and one large but both disappeared. Another name for the gate is Ai-men
