One of the largest draws to Kampong Cham is a seasonal one. During the wet season, the Mekong River swells and floods over many of the islands, depositing fertile nutrients and otherwise wiping the slate clean for the next growing season.

As the waters recede, the islands grow and the farmers take to the fields. But getting to a seasonally disappearing island as it turns out requires a seasonally disappearing bridge. The Bamboo Bridge is an amazing feat of craftsmanship, resolve and ingenuity. This ~650m / ~2100ft long bridge is made entirely from bamboo.

It creaks and moans with the force of the passing river below and the overhead traffic. Even while the bamboo flexes under foot, it does not stop the constant stream of traffic and even large trucks. The bridge lasts as long as it can, but is usually destroyed by the rising waters of the coming wet season. [it is a toll for one direction of passing]
