Bambarakanda Falls Kalupahana Reviews
Heighest Waterfall in Sri Lanka Aug 17, 2009
Bambarakanda is the heighest waterfall in Sri Lanka, it is located in Badulla district.
Below is the description given in wikipedia about Bambarakanda:
"Bambarakanda Falls or Bambarakele Falls is 263m high and the highest waterfall in Sri lanka and 299th highest waterfall in the world. It is situated in Kalupahana area in Badulla District on Colombo-Badulla highway. It is formed by Kuda Oya a tributary of Walawe Ganga. The Falls is located in a forest of Pine and tropical trees."
I visited the falls in somewhere in 2004/05 together with my university friends.
We visited the from Bandarawela (from a friend's place) and used a Colombo - Badulla bus to get to Kalupahana. From there we got off the bus and bought some chocolates and buscuits from the small shops at Kalupahana junction (These shops are very small and do not have much stuff, so you better buy things from Badulla or Bandarawela).
Then we started travelling towards the falls. There is a road but it was very much damaged. You can use a vehicle like - double cab/truck but please dont try cars (situtation may be better now). Walking in the road it was realy nice to enjoy the nature. However the walk was bit tuff for us as we were not regular hikers.
The villagers we met said all the time that the falls are just two bends away, but those two were never ending!!!!
Finally we reached to the place from where we have to take a small foot-path towards the falls. We were exhausted by now and somehow found out that there is a retaurent/eco-lodge near-by. We went there and that lovely little palce was run by a lady and an elderly gentleman. They were kind to us and we made an order for our lunch. That place provides a spectacular view of the falls and its a one not to be missed on the world (if you visit pls dont miss it).
The caretakers of lodge gave us details of two other water falls in visinity; one by the name 'Lanka Falls' (as it resembles the shape of Sri Lanka). Then we started our journey towards the Bambarakanda and other falls while they were preparing our meals.
The walk to the Bambarakanda was easy compared to the that to the Lanka Falls. The path tp the latter is through a fine jungle and it is slippery. However when we finally reached the Lanka Falls it was worth the journey to the fullest.
After spending some good time at both waterfalls we went back and had our lunch.
Thats it about our visit to Bambarakanda and hope you will try it.
