Nice space, good food but very hyped up Mar 25, 2008
I was really excited to go to Balthazar because it's one of those much-raved-about restaurants by the famous chef who also owns Pastis (sp?) and recently also opened an Italian restaurant. Luckily I arrived just as it opened so I was able to get a table without reservations with no more than a 5 minute wait. Other who came in right behind me had a 45 to 1 hour wait!

We tried an assortment of brunch items, from French Toast (very good), hazelnut and sour cream waffles (pretty good - interesting!), and an egg and biscuit dish (too salty). Add 3 cups of coffee and 2 mimosas and voila = a $110 bill!

But despite this, the space is nice and the service is good, our waters were always filled to the brim and someone is always at your beck and call. But I remind you of the crowd that tends to spend $110 dollars on breakfast for 3 people - expect to meet many uber-privileged, often obnoxious young professionals.
A very large hippo outside Balthaz…

Hazelnut sour cream waffles, mimos…
