Ballarat is located in Victoria, Australia about 2 hours west of Melbourne.
A historical town most known for being a hot spot during the gold rush in the 1850s, you can visit Sovereign Hill to experience life in the gold rush times and even pan for gold. There is also the Ballarat Wildlife Park, where you can see kangaroos (and feed them!), koalas, emus, Tasmanian devils and other Aussie animals.

Ballarat is about an hour drive from the house. When we arrived at Sovereign Hill Saturday morning, we were given a brief history of this gold mining area. The children were allowed to choose a 19th century dress and then off we went to obtain a license and pan for gold. This was a really a fun day living the life of a miner, learning the harsh and unequal treatment given to the Chinese and learning about those who did strike it rich. The driver was fantastic! Makes all the difference as I sat in luxury listing to commentary. It was good do hear the driver talking about local history, how Melbourne is going etc… then moving onto more Australian history, then politics, world events and knowledge of other cities/ states. *sigh* if only I could be half as knowledgeable.
