Balinese BARONG KEKET dance Ubud Reviews
Sacred drama, battle of good and evil Apr 06, 2007
The Barong dance is one of the most important sacred dance in Bali.Full of humour and action, this drama is a powerful battle of Good and Evil, between Barong the Good and Rangda the Evil.
Because the play is charged with sorcery and magic, offerings are made before the performance to protect the players and a priest sprinkles the holy Barong and Rangda's masks with holy water.
The play could be performed by professional dancers but usually played by people working in the fields ,office or in shops:almost every Balinese boy and girl learns dance.
The Barong dance stages the story of Kunti Sraya,a theme of Hindu epic Mahabharata.
The Barong dance presented here, seen in Batubulan(price 50 000 IDR in 04 2007), is called Barong Ket or Barong Keket. The Barong keket wears a mask of lion and his friend is a monkey.
Barong is a mythical creature with a curved tail and represents the protector of the mankind, the spirits associated with white magic. The costume is worn by 2 dancers who form the forelegs and hindlegs, the first man manipulates the mask of lion.
Rangda is a mythical widow witch and represents the Evil. She rules the Evil spirits and witches who haunt the graveyards at night and practises black magic.
A princess is kidnapped by the forces of Evil(Rangda) and saved by forces of Good(Barong).
Barong and Rangda are fighting together, then kriss dancers attack Rangda with kriss(knives).
Rangda using magic, forces the kriss dancers to turn their kriss on themselves.
But the Barong, using its own powerful charm, protects them.
At the end,the kriss dancers are revived with water and an offering of blood of chicken is presented to the Evil spirits.
