Oldest Saloon in Montana Apr 08, 2017
This saloon was built in the beginnings of Virginia City in the 1860s. It started as the J. F. Stoer Saloon until it was bought in 1890 by the livery next door who renamed it (quite appropriately) the “Bale of Hay”. The building lay empty for a number of years until Charles Bovey bought it in 1946. The building was badly damaged in a fire in 1983 but they restored it very carefully from the inside; rebuilding the inner structure to maintain the original outward appearance. Today it is one of the most popular places to stop and visit in Virginia City. You cannot really say you have been to Virginia City if you did not stop here. Decent selection of beers (although I had a coke). Very nice old west décor and atmosphere. Friendly staff. Open 12 PM to 12 AM daily from Mid-May through the end of September. Live music and special events throughout the summer. This is the oldest saloon in Montana! Give it a try!
