Baiyun Hotel Huangshan Reviews
Looks can be deceiving Oct 21, 2011
The Huangshan Baiyun hotel is located within the complex of Mount Huangshan, close to the Bright Summit. The only way to get there, is by several hours of walk through some of the most beautiful parts of the park.
Even though it's officially four stars, I'd rate it less than the no star hotel we stayed at the day before.
Downstairs is a nice enough lobby with the reception and a bar annex little shop. Check-in went rather smoothly and in no time we got the key to room nr 8432. A positive note is that we got our passports back right away.
Our room was located on the 2nd floor and there's no elevator. But what's two extra floors after a full day of walking and climbing?
Our room turned out to be a tiny twin with filthy wall to wall carpet, twin beds, an armchair and a little table squeezed in between the bed and the window and a desk with the flat screen tv. Even though this is a non-smoking room, with the pictograms clearly banning the sigarette, it smells terribly of smoke and there are even marks of cigarette burn on the furniture and the carpet!
The room is downright flithy and hasn't been cleaned for several days, perhaps even weeks! There are crumbs on the floor and on the desk and there are black hairs on the pillow and between the sheets. I suspect the sheets have not been changed... Perhaps because all laundry needs to be carried upstairs by porters, which might be too costly. I surely used my own sleeping bag liner and pillow case.
There are stains all over the wall and the kettle is filthy too. But the bathroom is really filthiest of all. There's mold in the shower, the sink and between the tiles. There are plastic slippers that can be used to shower, but I start to doubt the hygiene of those too...
Apart from the mold, the bathroom is tiny with a shower, a decent toilet, a sink and as everywhere in China, plenty of amenities: soap, shampoo, comb, tooth brush etc.... On the plus side there's a rather new and well functioning hair dryer.
The walls are like cardboard and you can hear every cough in the rooms next door. Just our luck that our neighbours are having a party till the wee hours sounding as if they were having it in our very room.
There's a restaurant on site with really high prices, but this is understandable as all food needs to be carried up the mountain. We wanted to go and have dinner, but it turned out the restaurant (which is really big!) was entirely fully booked by Chinese tour groups. We could order but had to have our food brought to the room. Though prices are high, the portions are huge and the fried noodles and pumpkin cakes we ordered were really delicious.
I'd guess the extras like the umbrellas in the room, the down feather coats that can be borrowed, the heater, airco and hair dryer make for the four stars, but this means nothing when the room is tiny and dirty. It's no problem for just one night but it does not justify the horrid 1.685 RMB we paid per night. Fair enough to pay a lot more for accommodation up the mountain where absolutely every item needs to be brought by porters from down below, but for this kind of money I wish my room or at least the sheets to be clean!
