A bird's eye view of Bangkok Sep 12, 2009
Actually, this is more like an "airplane's view of Bangkok," as I haven't seen any birds up this high. At 88 floors (309 meters), it's the tallest building in Thailand, and one of the tallest all-hotel buildings in the world.

Buy a 200-baht entry ticket at the booth outside, then enter the lobby and take an immediate left to find the little "express" lift that takes you to the 77th floor. The air-conditioned observatory floor provides lots of information abut the views you see, as well as plenty of props for your "I was here" photo souvenirs.

On the far side of the floor, there is a nearly-hidden elevator door. This small and cramped elevator will take you to the 83rd floor lounge, where your entry ticket entitles you to one free drink. I wouldn't blame you for skipping it, but sipping a watermelon juice or beer and enjoying the view is a nice break.

But the adventurous might enjoy hunting for the stairway that leads up one more floor (if you see the human-sized space alien, you'll know you have found it). The 84th floor is a revolving steel-fenced carousel that plods around and around (if it is working), giving you a breathtaking view of the city below. Some might find it a bit unnerving, as the carousel clanks and squeaks a bit more than it probably should. But your photos will be much more clear than those shot through the glass windows of the observatory 7 floors below.

Yes, this is a typical tourist destination. But I enjoyed the view enough not to care. Check it out!
Guess which building is the Baiyok…
