Baischstraße: Karlsruhe's Beverly Hills in art nouveau style May 04, 2017
A 'must see' for all admirers of Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture is the hidden Baischstraße, just off Kaiserplatz. The street was planned to be the „Beverly Hills“ of Karlsruhe. A gatehouse separates the quiet dead-end lane from the busy, noisy square. All buildings in this lane were planned and built by the architect Hermann Billing between 1901 and 1903. There is half a dozen or so of pretty villas meant for wealthy people. In spite of some damage during the war this is still a fine example of authentic Jugendstil architecture.

Once I was really really lucky. I was there taking photos together with a colleague who is specialized in art nouveau, and we were almost run over by a lady on a bicycle. She turned out to be the wife of a lawyer who has his studio in one of the houses, and she allowed us in to see the hall, the staircase and a few rooms from inside. They still have the original stained glass windows, doors, woodcarved panels on wall and ceiling and so on. Beautiful.

Where? On the North side of the Kaiserplatz you'll see the huge house with the gate; just walk through.
