Massive amount of people at bars, outdoor vendors, clubs and restaurants May 12, 2012
From Copacabana, we flagged down a little white van by asking "Lapa" every time they pulled over to the side of the road to attempt to pick up a fare. Yes, the ones that said Leme kept on going, but they drive by every 60 seconds, and we jumped into the 5th or 6th van for R$ 2.75.

My friend and I were a little aghast by the man sticking his whole body out of a moving van continuously to find fares, but once the van was full, they didn't stop...barely for a light and barely for people in the street. With most of us sitting in the van and a few people standing, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and crazy ride-a perfect intro to our evening.

I was not prepared for the amount of people we would see in the street when we were dropped off by the Arches of Lapa. It was amazing!! There were vendors selling food and liquor and then lead to a row of restaurants and bars and clubs. Last time I was in Rio and told them I was from the US, we still had to pay to get in, but skipped a line of almost 100 people. We weren't really in the partying mood and found a perfect bar to sit, drink, and people watch. We sat at the outdoor area of Barbieri and it was a perfect view of all the people walking abck and forth and standing in line. We saw gorgeous couples, small groups of children (probably planning out how to rob folks), huge club bouncers, and lot of transgender men with perfect bodies and tight outfits.

We met a very entertaining couple at the table right next to us and she was so happy to have someone practice her English with. My friend had her first caipirinha and I enjoyed all 4 of mine (smile)!

Drinks drinks drinks! Mar 31, 2011
Lapa was a fantastic time!!

I recomend going on Friday nights as the street is full of thousands of people drinking!! There are lots of bars and nightclubs in this area but you don't even need them! Grab a $2 beer from a street vendor and have a seat on the stairs!! Drink away the night and make some friends!

Be careful of pickpocketers, they are watching you late at night. I know a few people that were robbed here so take obvious precautions -- ladies don't wear any jewelry, try to go with a group, and be aware if you have your camera out!

Yes, I couldn't get over drinking out in the street. We saw a gang of little children try to rob a fella unsuccessfully.

The best place to hang out at night in Rio! Mar 25, 2011
Welcome to Lapa!! The place in Rio where you could find whatever you're looking for! And what you're not looking for either! This is the place right in the middle of downtown where you will find every Rio's tribes, cultures, music, anyway, every single type of people there is! This is the place where Carnaval goes on during the whole year, but not only with samba, but with many different types of music and atractions! Many clubs where you could pay to get in and dance, and others where you could do the same for free, but if you're not interested in neither, just stay outside, and enjoy the a good fresh air while have some great drinks! Come and have fun as if there was no tomorrow!

Yes, there certainly is a rage of things to enjoy. We were not looking to pay a cover charge and ended up a bar and had a blast!

Cheap fun night time May 07, 2011
Cheap and nice option to have fun getting to know a cultural place in Rio. Lapa is the district of many bars, show houses, clubs and restaurants, all together with a fair where you can get local food. A lot of people prefer just getting together on the streets to drink beer, eat something and get to know new people.

Lapa on friday nights!! Sep 16, 2010
So My travbuddy notified me I haven't wrote enough 'reviews' so I figured I would give back and write about the fabulous Lapa District in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. When I went in Sept 2010, it was off the hook!! The streets were packed, the Caprinhas were strong (and not expensive at all:) There were drummers and people dancing everywhere, I was thinking (this is a typical friday night?LOL) It was great, and the group I was with partied till the wee hours of 5am!! Definately not a place I would go alone, but great when you meet a group of like-minded strangers! They have vendors all around too with food and stuff so if you get the munchies (from too many caprinhas you can get some grub)..I saw these two young teenagers rolling around a trashcan with loud music coming from it, it was spray painted with unique grafitti and they had two 12's in there!haha. It definately contributed to the high energy that lapa had on a friday night:)
awsome drummers...
