Lapa Nights May 21, 2008
Looking for a place to go have fun at night in Rio?
Lapa is the place you're looking for! Lapa is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rio, it has tradition, it's beautiful, it's dirty. It is a bohemian place since the early 1900's. Samba was born here around 1910, Chorinho was born here too. Maybe all the famous brazilian rythms that you've heard about and like were born here (except Bossa Nova). It's a place where writers and poets they used to come to write about Rio, Brazil, love, affairs, the bohemian lifestyle, carnival, womans, and everything else of our day-to-day lifes that poetry and books makes sound so special. At Lapa, nowadays, you're going to see all kinds of people - with diferent opinions, behavior, clothes/apparel, incoming $$, philosophy, et, etc - all kinds of music (from funk carioca to the most tradicional chorinho), bars, and nightclubs that will charge you BRL 15 to get in before midnight and you'll have free beer, water and sodas for all night long. You can also stay all night walking around, making some new friends (a lot of people in Rio speaks english), while you're buying a beer for just BRL 1,50 on the streets. Trashy, streety, hype, fun, trendy, crazy, cheesy, beautiful, ugly, weird, even more fun, interesting, bizarre... that's just a few words that can describe this wonderful place and the mix of cultures that you'll see there! It is, definetly, one of my 3 favourite places in Rio. By the way, friday night is the best one! Part of the Voyage voyage... travel blog |
