Bahla Fort - UNESCO World Heritage Site Feb 26, 2010
Bahla is a culturally significant fortress, witnessed by it being the sole Omani fort earning status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only is the fort massive (several walls are 165 feet high!), it is easily the oldest. Although the major build-up of the site occurred in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries when the Bahla oasis was at its zenith, its origins began around 1000 B.C. Like most structures in Oman, the fort was built from unbaked bricks that have a short shelf life.

The fort was pretty much in a total state of collapse before the government began a massive restoration project in 1987. The importance was evident from the early photographs – there are some from 1885 revealing a pair of gargantuan wind towers, believed to have been the highest ever constructed in Oman. Sadly, there is not much left of these towers today, and the restoration continues. Bahla Fort remains closed to the public today even though they have fully restored an ancient mosque within the fort and it is being used by the locals. I’m not quite sure why, because just across the street is a large and beautiful mosque (another Sultan Qaboos Mosque).

Mark’s wife has worked with the guy in charge of the current restoration, who is apparently brilliant and has invented many of the latest techniques to properly resurrect ancient architecture. The fort is easily located, just a few miles down the main drag beyond Nizwa and one to keep an eye on. No doubt that when the veils get lifted on this impressive structure it will be a destination well worth visiting!
