The state of Bahia is located in Brazil's northeast and often referred to as the "Land of Happiness" or the "Land of the Drum". In the southern part of the state, the city of Porto Seguro was where the Portuguese first "discovered" and claimed Brazil as their own. The capital of Salvador was established on the peninsula of the baia Todos os Santos (All Saint's Bay). The entire state was named after the bay and called Bahia.
Bahia has a high concentration of people of African descent because many slaves were brought to the state to work on the sugar plantations. Because of this and cultural resistance, much of the West African culture has been preserved. The combination of Portuguese, Native American and African influences created a unique culture that is integral to the larger Brazilian culture. Bahia is where candomble, capoeira and samba orginated. This state draws many tourists because of its miles of beautiful beaches and rich culture. It has the longest coastline of all the coastal Brazilian states. Inland there are historical cities and a big national park called Chapada Diamantina. Popular places to visit are: Salvador, Morro de Sao Paulo, Praia do Forte, Cachoeira, Lencois, and Porto Seguro.

After being bitten by a cat earlier in the week, I had to get the shots
on the exact dates the nurse gave me otherwise they would be useless.
As I was waiting for a cab, it started pouring heavily. The cab driver
dropped me off at the medical center and I stepped in to a huge puddle
of water up to my knees. The drainage system there is not the greatest.
