Bahariya Overview

A small oasis in the Egyptian Sahara desert. The largest town in the oasis is Bawiti. The area is being rapidly built up as the Egyptian government is trying to relieve overpopulation in Cairo by encouraging people to move.

The Oasis of Bahariya is the closest Oasis to Cairo and the most convenient one for tourists looking for a glimpse of the desert.

The settlement in Bawiti is the entry point to the Oasis and guides usually pick people up at the bus stop for the tours.

Buses to Bawiti start from the Turgoman bus station in downtown Cairo. There are two morning buses from Cairo - one at 7:00 a.m. and the next at 8:00 a.m. Buses from Bawiti to Cairo are at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The best way to experience the desert is to go for an overnight camp with one of the local guides. They stick to Bedouin traditions and cultures and have a great respect for the desert.

Must see : Black desert, White desert, crystal rocks..

And of course, enjoy the rides over the dunes!!
