Fantastic location and great hotel in Old Bagan Feb 21, 2014
The Bagan River View Hotel is located in a stunning location with fantastic views across the Ayeyarwaddy River. Our room had the view of Gawdawpalin Temple, one of the largest and most impressive in Bagan. It is the only hotel in Bagan where two ancient 11th century pagodas are located within the hotel compound. The hotel is located in Old Bagan, one of the world’s most fascinating cultural heritage sites. Hotel Bagan River View is designed according to authentic Myanmar architecture and surrounded by gardens with century old trees.

It is also a hotel with interesting quirks. For one, there is an ATM machine in the hotel lobby (not many ATMs in Myanmar yet as of 2014). However, the ATM machine has been broken and not yet repaired for more than a month when we got there. There is Wifi, but only at the lobby and quite slow (average of under 100kbps). So that means the place will have to be enjoyed without the comforts of being connected online. But that is a small inconvenience compared to what one can experience even just at the hotel grounds. The restaurant is located on a wooden open air deck near the Ayeyarwaddy river, with the two pagodas just right beside. There are lots of squirrels in the trees, as well as crows. These crows if one is not watchful, will steal food from your plate.

The best views of the hotel are early in the morning and during the evening. It is so peaceful and quiet in the area, you can hardly hear any motorized vehicles passing by except for boats passing along the river.

The junior suite is huge (over 60 sqm./600 sq.ft.), there is a living room which opens to a porch with the views of Gawdawpalin Temple. It is located in a garden setting and hardly any people pass by except the guest who are billeted there. The only complaint I have is that the beds are not in proportion to the size of the room, they are fairly narrow (not two double beds but rather two twin beds), hard to move around, and the cushioning is not as soft as I expected. The bathroom, while fairly large, seems basic compared to higher end resorts.

The breakfast buffet (usually included in the cost) is great, especially when taken early in the morning before heat of the midday sun is out. Most of the guests visiting the hotel are part of a tour package, and many are in their 50s-60s.

Overall, this is a hotel worth coming back to, and I hope to see some improvements in the internet speed and ATM in the future.

Can't agree more! The room can actually accommodate more than 10 people if more beds will squeeze in. Very huge and in a very nice location! I love specially the dining area. Winner! :D

Great review, thanks for sharing. The part about the crows was funny, but oh so true! When I was there a very long time ago I don't remember seeing any hotels or tourists. I believe there are a lot and tourists. By the way, congratulations on your HHH award!

Bagan Hotel River View Overview

There are swimming pool, baby sitting available for all guests and butler service available for the suites. Boat trips can be arranged and bikes procured for those who want to cycle around the ruins. Thit Sa Wa Di concert hall stages occasional traditional dance performances, and can be hired for private functions (150 pax seated, 250 standing). (03/01)There are many different room types, but all are similarly themed. The standard bedroom is medium sized with wooden floorboards, unfussily furnished with local woods and rattan wares, with individually selected paintings and ornaments. The moderate sized bathrooms have bathtub as well as shower and hot water 24 hrs a day. Sattellite TV and in house movies, IDD telephone via the operator, remote controlled air-conditioning. The hotel is located just 10 minutes drive from Nyaung U Airport. It is well maintained tropical garden setting, including some large established old trees, by the banks of the Ayeyarwady river. On the other side of the Archaeological Museum from the Thiripyitsaya Sakura hotel, with the 11th century Gawdawpalin Temple rising above the property on the side away from the river. All day dining at the Ya Tha Min Gyi cafe in a block just before reaching the reception-there are a few outdoor tables on a narrow terrace for al fresco meals. Tandipa River Terrace and Gardens serves the same fare as Ya Tha Min Gyi, from a short selection of local and international dishes, but in the open air as the name suggests (subject to weather conditions, generally open October-April). For drinks with snacks the outdoor Koe Lone Village bar obliges from 10:00-midnight outside of the monsoon season, whilst the Setkupan Yard does similar all year round. One storey teak buildings linked by terracotta brick walkways, designed in Burmese fashion to blend in with the majectic surroundings. The shrubbery lends a homely touch. Medium sized lobby lounge with decoration reflecting the local heritage. Ample for one standard sized group to check in.
