Badeschiff, Unique City Pool/Beachbar Berlin Reviews
Unique swimming/beach bar experience, with panoramic city views Jul 29, 2011
The Arena Badeschiff, situated in the district of Treptow offers a fabulously unique swimming/bathing and social experience, with amazing panoramic views of the city, including views of the Molecule Men Statue and the famous Oberbaumbrücke(bridge). These are best seen from the pool.
My photos really don't do it justice, so I include the internet link, as even if you don't understand the German, the pictures and video give a good impression.
The Badeschiff (bathing ship) is in fact a converted shipping container in the middle of the Spree river, which you approach along a zig-zagging wooden boardwalk full of deck-chairs and sun lovers.
Make sure you use the showers at the end of the boardwalk before going in the pool or the pool attendant will tell you off, as it's important to remove sun oil to maintain the water quality.
Although the pool can get a bit crowded in the afternoon, there is a below-surface-level shelf all around the interior, so you can comfortably just sit in the water enjoying the sunshine, whilst surveying a curious and unique mix of cityscape and beach.
Behind the boardwalk is a man-made beach on the banks of the Spree and a bar. This is a very trendy and popular meeting place, so drinks are expensive, think double what you would normally pay, even water is expensive. Also you aren't allowed to take in your own food or drinks, so be warned!
Neverthless, the Badeschiff is a great way to spend a day. There are showers, changing and toilet facilities there - hence an entrance fee of 4 Euros per adult.
On summer evenings, the boardwalk is illuminated and torches lit. Young people and families hang out on the beach around the bar area and you will see people swimming till late in the evening e.g 10pm. There's a dance area, VIP area and Massage deck by the beach.
When the bar is busy in the evening, they seem to give priority to locals and regulars, which when you've had to pay 4 Euros for entrance is very annoying - hence I have dropped to 4 stars. (In the evening you will have to pay a second time, if you visited earlier in the day, whether you intend swimming or not.)
Have to say though, this place really is worth a visit, day or night. In winter, the Badeschiff morphs into an indoor pool and the boardwalk is converted into a covered area with Finnish Saunas and relaxation decks.
The area around the Badeschiff is also worth exploring, as it is part of a large entertainment/leisure complex and there are other places of interest/bars and restaurants within a short walk. e.g. Club der Visionäre and the Freischwimmer restaurant.
