Backpacking in Namibia Apr 16, 2011
I was nervous about travelling in Namibia alone because it's actually an expensive country and I was there for a month and couldn't afford to rent a car on my own. In fact at Christmas there weren't too many travellers there to hook up with and rent a car. But the fact is that you can very easily travel all around, as I did, either by co-renting for short trips, or using public transport, or hitch-hiking. The latter is as safe as it can be because it's a normal way to get around because there isn't always public transport. There is already a system in place - the black community hitch all the time (white people who live there tend to be rich and have their own cars), and you pay for the ride - usually around or just under what you would pay on public transport.

The safest way to hitchhike it is go to a petrol station in a town, check out the number plates of the cars which are a good indication of whether they might be going your way, and ask a *family* for a lift. You also get to meet so many interesting people this way!
