Centrally Located Clean & Active Hostel Jan 05, 2011
I stayed at K's the entire week I was in Kyoto. I was in a mixed dorm for six people. The room was small but clean, airconditioned and had storage lockers. The bathrooms and the common areas were really nice for a hostel and very clean! The common area was very new looking and nicely set up. The staff was very friendly and so helpful! I met a lot of cool people there and had a great time!

One thing to note, when I first arrived I was given a space in a room in the older building. It smelled rather moldy and I asked to be moved to another room. They moved me over to the new building and everything was smooth sailing from there on out.

Backpacker's Hostel K's House Kyoto May 20, 2010
For the next 4 nights I decided to stay in Backpacker's Hostel K's House in Kyoto, Japan. This hostel is located about a 10 minutes walk northeast of Kyoto Station, and about a 10 minute walk to Sanjusangendo temple. I decided to stay in this hostel after reading favorable reviews and rating.

The building I stayed in was newly built, with the lobby in the first floor, the lounge area with a kitchen, tv, balcony, computers, and laundry room on the 2nd floor, and floors 3-6 are the rooms themselves. It has only 1 elevator, so there is a bit of a waiting time when trying to get to the lobby or to your room, but it didn't really bother me.

I stayed in a 6-bed mixed dorm. The room was very clean. Underneath the bunk bed were 2 locker spaces, 1 for each person using the bed, and I thought that was really smart because it minimize clutter, and made the room clean as a result, instead of luggages being stored out in the open. I was able to place my luggage, and backpack with plenty of room to spare.

Each floor has its own bathroom area, with shared sinks, and an enclosed separate shower and toilet area. The toilets are the high-tech Japanese toilet with peri-water spray, man I love those things.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, they provide rental towel for 100 yen, as well as the 1-day Kyoto Bus pass. Maps of the area is provided free. Next door is a bar area where they serve drinks, food, and all you can eat breakfast.

I paid about 2300 yen per night, which I felt was a good deal for a hostel in Japan. They also provide hostel events, such as Gion walking tour with limited spots available, and movie nights. Outside is a bike shop where you can rent bicycles to ride around Kyoto.

The only downside to this hostel is the location, it's a bit of a walk from Kyoto Station, but if you don't mind walking 10-15 minutes, I suppose it's no so bad. I highly recommend this place if you plan on visiting Kyoto on a budget.

Big busy place, good to meet others Oct 03, 2009
K's Backpacker Hostel is a big place, great to meet people. The common area has a mess of comfortable couches and tables and a big kitchen, pretty good sprawl. The rooms are a bit stuffy and musty and the front entry way and some of the rooms have an odor that I'm learning associate with hostels in Asia -- that of stinky feet. (Ew.) All in all, a good place to stay.

K's House Kyoto Apr 03, 2008
As one of the most expensive country to travel in the world, K's House in Kyoto is really going to change the preception on Japan's hotels.

Owned by Katsuhiko (thus it's K's house), it rated among the lowest quarter of hotels in the Kyoto's prime district, yet, very comfortable to stay, in my experience, at the very least.

I felt many things were at ease since the early reservation, up until the provided guiding map to reach the hotel, and during my stay.

Shared dormitory is at Y 2,000 and private room is Y 3,000, a deal that is very hard to find in Japan. All rooms are all air conditioned, modernly furnished, well maintained and their kitchen is superbly clean !

Evidence for these great experiences can easily be found at the wall-board at the living room, where postcards from impressed guests from all over the world, shows their testimonials.

I was very lucky to have opted this place.

Common shower room is within reach, and spacious (space is Japan's luxury). Bicycle rent at Y 700 per day, and you can purchase all the available bus ticket, personal needs (tooth paste, towell rent etc) from the receptionist.

One word of advise: don't arrive before 7 AM, as the reception may not be opened, so checking-in is difficult to process.

Perfect place for exploring Koyto Aug 31, 2008
*Note: this review is based on my experiences before the new large extension that has been built recently*

Reasonably near the large JR Station and central areas, like its Tokyo cousin, K's House in Kyoto is set away from the main road down a poky back road which adds to its charm.

Staff were polite and very helpful, especially in guiding us to where we could hire bikes after all the Hostel's bikes had been hired out.

All in all, superb value for money!

Four Star Hostel Experiance in Kyoto Jul 14, 2007
If you are going to stay in Kyoto, and you do not want to schmooze with the Five Star experiance, but also do not want to settle for dark and smelly accomodations, however cultural, then K's House is definitely the best place to go. You will meet friendly people from all over the world, and perhaps you will meet some mates to go for day trips with.

Located within comfortable walking distance from Kyoto Central Train Station, you walk by Kyoto Tower and past a few コンビに and there you are. There is a sento (bath house) across the quaint street, a bucket of umbrellas out front (please only take your own), 24 hour laundry access, ample public areas for guests and guests of guests, bikes to rent by the hour or by the day, and very friendly and helpful staff. Actually the staff generally rock!!

For the price that you pay to stay at K's, its hard to imagine how any other hostel can continue to stay in business when trying to compete. There is an answer however. Due to the popularity of K;s House, it is usually booked 2-3 months in advance, so book fast and book early. You really will not want to stay anywhere else once you have stayed at K's.

I was sleeping when my roommates came in at 3am, a couple of drunk and giggly Aussie girls, and they did not know how to make their beds. Tired and inebriated, it took them a bit to make their beds and get settled in. As far as the inconvenience, it wasnt something that i couldnt deal with hahaha. K's offers 24 hour service and accomidations, and most people will make use of it. Laundry and showers and the public areas are also open 24 hours, and is a real convenience to wayward travellers. A lot of japanese also use K's house which gives it the local gold star seal of approval.

Access to the local buslines and subway are close by. They also have locations in Tokyo, and Kawaguchi-ko (at the base of Mt Fuji). I highly reccomend them for any leg of your trip, to any flavor of travellers. You will not be dissapointed.

Enjoy!!

Travelling on a yen! Mar 08, 2007
It was an absolutely great place to stay when you are on a budget and even when you are not. The staff was friendly and curteous. They would make sure you were settled in, tell you where you could find some great places to eat. The people staying there with me were from all over the world and we would stay up sharing stories and beverages *wink, wink*! I stayed in a room with three complete strangers because I went on my own but they made me feel welcomed.

Another great thing was that they accepted American credit cards so I didn't have to stop at the atm for cash. If I am ever in Kyoto again the K's House Hostel is where you will find me!
