The best hostel in the WORLD!! Jul 12, 2009
Absolutely, by far, the best hostel I have EVER stayed in.

Staff

Toshi and Meg are the nicest people in the world. They are a couple who run the hostel together and are absolutely brilliant. We realised that my partner had lost his wallet on the journey to the hostel and Meg called the various train stations we passed through to see if it had been handed in. Meg also offered to drive us into town and collect us on her way back as she was going that way. Toshi was fun, kind and great to chat to. They organised a sushi party and spent hours preparing delcious food to celebrate the birthday of one of the guests.

The Hostel itself

It looks like a Swiss chalet from the outside and it feels like a luxury home on the inside. A huge lounge, with a tatami mat dining section, sofas, large DVD collection, vending machine, wooden floors, two PCs, floor to ceiling windows, dining tables and chairs makes you feel really at home.

The Kitchen

Spotlessly clean, well equipped, cooking suggestions and recipes in convenient places, free tea and coffee 24/7.

Laundry

The washing machines and driers are good value and do the job perfectly.

Rooms

We stayed in a dorm for most of our stay, then upgraded to a private room. The dorm was very clean, with comfortable bunk beds, tatami mat floor, large windows, a wash basin, and a fair amount of space for luggage.

The private room was exceptionally clean, with an en-suite bathroom, huge comfortable double bed, towels, TV and large window.

The rooms were great.

Bathroom

Heated toilet seat washlet toilets, hot powerful showers and hairdriers provided in front of a huge mirror. Very clean and well equipped.

Excursions/Extras

The sushi party was excellent value for money and so much fun.

There was a folder with suggested activities to do in the area, which was very helpful and inspirational. Meg and Toshi also helped booked tours for those interested in canoeing, rock climbing and other activities.

They also offered to take us on a firefly spotting tour. They drove us to the location free of charge and we only had to pay for entrance fees. Bicycle hire was very reasonable and the bikes were good sturdy mountain bikes.

Location

The beautiful Hakuba alps is primarily a skiiing destination, but we went in midsummer and were not disappointed by the stunning mountain views, hiking opportunities, wild flowers and ice blue rivers.

We originally booked for 2 nights in this hostel, but extended our stay but a further 6 nights as we just couldn't bear to leave. We will absolutely be returning and cannot think of a better place to stay.

Everyone who stayed at the hostel during the time we were there agreed that we all felt like family, not guests, and it is this undeniable feeling that goes such a long way towards making this the best hostel in the world.

Place in the mountains, sir? Hmm suits you! Aug 31, 2008
Probably the best hostel I went to in my trip to Japan, based in the small village of Hakuba which is the perfect base for your travels around the local area come winter or summer.

The hostel is actually converted from a Ski Hotel. The kitchen is therefore a professional kitchen more decked out to feed loads of hungry skiers than rabid backpackers, lots of space and full facilities make it easy to cook things simple or grand however.

The bath there is probably the best part of the hostel, absolutely huge and uses water from the hills and mountains that surround Hakuba (listen for the sound of rushing water when you get there and you'll get a very interesting surprise ;) )

I went in the summer and took advantage of the bike hire to explore the place. When I came back there was a large telly and a PS2 to play on all evening.

All in all fantastic fun and would recommend to anyone.
