Baby Blues BBQ, West Hollywood Reviews
Baby Blues BBQ Sep 23, 2010
Once in a while I get a craving for a big slab of BBQ and side dishes like mac-n-cheese, collard greens and cornbread. LA is not know for the barbeque but driving to Memphis or Texas just aren’t o0ptions, but on the edge of West Hollywood, Baby Blues BBQ is a good place to satisfy that craving.
I was introduced to this place by my best friend who was 6 months pregnant at the time. So, if there’s anyone who knew about cravings, it was her. She gave me a gift certificate for $30 to spend here. Even more motivation to go, dinner was free. Boy, was I delightfully surprised. For $30 we got a BBQ meat platter with 3 types of meat (we picked the Memphis baby back ribs, the Texas baby back ribs and BBQ chicken), 3 sides (mac-n-cheese, collard greens and BBQ beans) and 2 corn breads to share. It was plenty of food and there were lots of leftovers.
The place serves both Texas and Memphis style BBQ (yes, there is a big difference) with a variety of meats: pork, beef and chicken as well as fish and shrimp. But just as good as the frilled meats are the side orders. You have your staple BBQ fare, but with a twist. For examples, cornbread with jalapenos, collard greens with apple smoked bacon and mac-n-chesses with a little…is that…gorgonzola? Yumdeliumcious. Beer and wine are available, but if you order ice tea, pop or kool aid, you get it in a mason jar (nice touch).
The service is also very good. The chef even comes out to talk to the guests and see how they like the food. The waiting staff is also very helpful and friendly. Even the busboys go out of their way to make sure the place is clean. You may have to wait for a table, especially on a Friday night for dinner, but the wait isn’t painfully long, but definitely worth it.
The place is really cool inside and not pretentious or glamorous. Rather, they promote eating with your hands and with the variety of BBQ sauces they have on the table you’ll be using more than your fair share of napkins. The sauces are great! You have the choice of sweet, hot, XX and XXX (I guess that would be hotter and hottest). Depending on the bite you want, you can try any one or a mixture of them all. It’s all up to you.
I’ve been to this restaurant a couple of times and have never been disappointed. I’ve also had the takeout from the Venice location. Both are equally great. The West Hollywood location is fairly large so you don’t feel like your knocking elbows with your neighbors while you eat. It will get a bit loud as they do blast the Dixie music during mealtime (it just makes the place a bit more authentic). This is by far my favorite BBQ place in LA and when I get the craving…
