Baan Puu Paan Koh Samed Reviews
Waterfront Bungalow on Koh Samet Sep 25, 2011
Baan Puu Paan - also known to the regulars as "Lizzy's". Located in a private and quiet location on the water's edge, minutes walk to the beaches on either side, and close to motorbike rental places. About 10-15 minutes in a taxi to the main beach - taxi to Saikaew Beach will cost between 100-200 baht each way.
I find it to be a bit of a hidden gem - it is out of the way, but easily accessible by motorbike, taxi, or speedboat (they even have their own jetty). It is a great place to chill and relax, with sun baking on the jetty and swimming by day, and at night they turn the jetty into a bit of a restaurant, with low tables, cushions and candlelights.
Food is amazing, with a European menu, and delicious deserts. Is a little more expensive than what you could expect to pay around Saikaew Beach, but still relatively cheap for Thailand. They will even bring cocktails out to the jetty during the day if you ask. I suggest you try the steak for dinner with mashed potato - just amazing and cooked to perfection. It is hard to find places in Thailand where Thai chefs can cook western foods properly, yet the chefs here at Baan Puu Paan are amazing. They also use very fresh ingredients which are delivered from the mainland daily.
The rooms are spacious, yet bathrooms are a little small - really only enough room for a toilet and sink, but they squeeze a shower in too. Lizzy makes all the linen herself, including the sheets, cushion covers and curtains. Not much privacy from the outside with the curtains, as they are pretty much see-through. For a double air con room literally 5 metres from the waters edge, prices are 700baht a night, and can sleep an extra person on a day bed for an extra price. There are 3 bungalows over the water with a private balcony, but are only fan rooms, and start at over 1000baht a night. Prices also tend to change depending on the season and time of year.
Lizzy herself is an excellent host - we went for my birthday last year and she ordered a cake from the mainland which was delivered within a day. If you give her the name of the speedboat company, she will ring and book a time for you to be picked up. If you have a taxi number, she will organise for it to pick you up from the wharf at the mainland. She is also up for long conversations about your travels, and can recommend a few places for sightseeing also.
You do need to book if staying on the weekend as she tends to fill up pretty quickly, especially in high season.
Overall a great place to spend some quality R&R time away from the main touristy beaches.
Be sure to check out their pet pig out the back :))
