Good non-Mongolian stir-fry meals disguised as BBQ in a garage-box Nov 10, 2012
N47°54'46.59" E106°53'51.03" Reservation is needed when you like to eat on the terrace or in the restaurant. Otherwise, you will be shown a converted garage-box next door and, although tasteful decorated, sounds like a big box inside.

The Mongolians may be forgiven what BBQ actually is. In fact this is a stir-fry cooking restaurant, so you select ingredients and the grill master stir-fries your meal. Complete menus are available too.

The downside of stir-fry cooking is that guests, specific the complete expat community of Ulaanbaatar, have to leave their tables to select their ingredients to be cooked by the grill master. Constant walking around is annoying, especially with large tour groups in the garage-box restaurant.

We avoided their non-traditional Mongolian food by ordering in August 2012 the more traditional Mongolian chicken khorkhog for 2 persons for 25900. The real traditional dish is with mutton, but the chicken legs were an excellent replacement. The served chicken broth or bouillon was the best we ever eaten. Really delicious. The salad with potato and sausage tasted very good. Chicken too. For 2 persons, the portions were oversized. Hey, this is BBQ! Service was efficient. Staff speaks English really well. Recommended while not eating in the garage-box.

The American interpretation of the Mongolian kitchen Aug 20, 2011
BD’s Mongolian Barbeque is an American restaurant chain and their interpretation of the Mongolian kitchen. It is all very commercial and oriented to the western tourists, but very refreshing if you don’t feel like ordering from a menu.

This restaurant has a interior that resembles a saloon from a western movie, which is a bit weird given the fact they are all about Mongolian food. They do have a big buffet with lots of different meats, vegetables, salads and sauces. And it all carries signs in English so you know what it is. You just put it on a plate and bring it to the cooks, who bake it while they throw it around with fancy moves. You can return as many times as you like, so it’s impossible to leave this place not being full.
