Splendid B&B in Oltrarno Neighborhood of Florence Aug 09, 2016
The B&B Bonsignori is a bed and breakfast hotel located in a neighborhood or quarter of Florence called Oltrarno, a name which means beyond the Arno. The area is south of the Arno, so it is on the other side of the river from where the Uffizi Museum and Piazza della Signora are located. The hotel itself is on Via Maggio which begins on the south side of the Arno River after crossing Ponte Santa Trinita. Via Maggio is a notable historic street in Florence, dating back to the 13th century, and was where most of the aristocrats lived during the 16th century, so the buildings here have a rather austere look to them for this reason, and that elegance has been maintained to modern times. A number of the addresses on the street have some historical prominence to them with stories to tell.

As Italian hotels go, this one has rather decent sized rooms, larger than normal compared to some I have stayed in over the years. The decor is rather simple, but nicely done with wood floors, wooden beams in the ceiling, some shelves on one wall with various "objets d’art", and some antique style furniture. Not simply thrown together to make a room, but carefully considered I think to give the room a very homey feel to it. The bed is good sized and comfortable with end tables on either side, as well as a small sleigh bed along one of the side walls. The bathroom is equally nice in style, and with modern sink, toilet, duvet and fixtures. The shower is smallish, but quarter circle in shape rather than square, making is easier to maneuver around in. Good shower head and hot water a plenty.

The place is run by a very nice young lady who lives in one of the rooms of the hotel, more like an apartment room of sorts, and gathered she lives there to attend to the place. I understood that the owners had refurbished the place as a hotel leaving some of the original character in place such as the wooden beam ceilings and portions of original frescoes left exposed. The young lady was very polite and helpful to us on arrival, showing us the room, kitchen areas with various appliances to use, tourist information and telephone with various numbers for taxi’s and such. She also gave us a tourist map and unfolded it to show us the location of the hotel and various sights nearby that she considered worth visiting and pointing out the best places to eat.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this bed & breakfast hotel. Quiet at night for restful sleep, a good choice of breakfast foods & drinks to start the day off with some nourishment, and a good location in the Oltrarno neighborhood. It’s right near the Piazza Santo Spirito, a very short walk to the Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens, and farther afield the Piazzale Michelangelo and Ponte Vecchio, which require more extended walking but not too far and can be reached in 15-20 minute on foot. The wifi is free here and good quality, the kitchen and sitting areas are open at all times to use and the young lady available for assistance when needed, but we had no cause to disturb her during our visit. A highly recommend place to stay if looking for something a bit off the beaten path, but still very much in the historic center of Florence.

B&B Bonsignori Overview

The B&B Bonsignori lies in the heart of Florence in one of the oldest palazzos of Via Maggio, dated XIV hundred years and offers an informal, friendly and yet private atmosphere. The B&B offers two spacious rooms full of character, recently lovingly restored to reveal antique decorated timber beams and other original features. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, tv and free internet. Via Maggio is one of the most prestigious historical streets of Florence. A stones throw away from the Ponte Vecchio. Via Maggio, once home to the florentine aristocracy, today houses the most exclusive antique shops, whilst the neighbouring area is bustling with craftsmen’s workshops, shops as well as little markets. The Boboli Gardens, the delightful Piazza S. Spirito and the Uffizi are only a few steps away from the palazzo and, crossing the river, it’s only a short walk to the Duomo, Piazza Signoria and Santa Croce. The B&B can be found on the second floor of the palazzo. There is no lift.
