Quirky Modern Hotel May 26, 2010
The Axel Hotel is part of a boutique chain with properties in only Berlin, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. Maybe they only put them in cities that start with "B" :-)
The hotel's slogan is "Heter-Friendly". It caters mainly to queers but anyone with a love of modern design is welcome. At about $115 USD per night I'd classify it as mid-range. You can definately find cheaper and more expensive hotels in Buenos Aires.
The bed and sheets are very nice. The staff is friendly. I've enjoyed the included breakfast buffet.
The hotel is modern, perhaps to an extreme. It's open-air up to the 4th floor with glass stairs and glass elevators. Very cool to look at! At the top on the fifth floor is a pool with a glass bottom visible from the lobby. Also on the 5th floor is a sauna, two hot tubs, a steam room and gym equipment. We treated ourselves to massages offered either in your room or on the 5th floor. My massuse was very professional, experienced and attentive.
The Axel Hotel may not be for everyone. The showers in each room are enclosed in clear glass and mostly exposed to the rest of the room. If you're with your spouse/partner and are comfortable showering in front of them it's not problem. If you're two friends, let's just hope you're not shy!
My other caution is the neighborhood. San Telmo is a cute part of town, very close to everything. It can be a little dangerous at night however so you need to be very cautious about going out at night on foot. People tell me that much of Buenos Aires, or any city of 12 million is like this.
For queer travelers or any lovers of modern design I'd definately recommend the Axel Hotel.
