The West Coast of the Southern Alps (Te Tai o Poutini) has been a destination for peoples travelling the seaways of the world since the first navigators guided their waka (vessels) to these shores. Awatuna was known in those times as a safe anchorage and calm landing place after those long sea voyages from out of the Pacific Ocean. The traditional practice of providing for the needs and rest of travellers is carried on today by your hosts, Pauline, Hëmi and their family at Awatuna Homestead.
