Avon, or Kinnakeet as it was once called, is a fantastic Atlantic beach village. The region is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic for it's many shipwrecks that still lay just yards off the coast. The winds are perfect for sailing and kite sports. The water is often rough enough for surfing and sometimes calm enough for wading. Most of the seaside homes are weekly rentals. It's a quiet beach which is great for families but it also has a fantastic character appealing to travelers. Besides the sports Avon is close to Hatteras Light House and nature trails.
Avon also serves as a great base for Pirate Hunters! Ocrakoke Island, site of Blackbeards death and supposed treasure, is just short drive and ferry ride away.

One of them died, though, before he could throw it back, and the people staying in the condo across the way yelled at him to throw it to them. We could smell the fish cooking that evening, so I guess they had a nice dinner.

Left Old Mystic, CT and started south for the Outer Banks of NC. Had origionally planned to lay over somewhere and make this leg a two day trip but as I got closer, I changed my mind and decided to continue without stopping. Drove down the lenght of the NJ Turnpike after crossing the George Washingto...
