Window-shopping on the Champs Élysées Apr 29, 2011
The Champs Elysee is the most famous shopping street in Paris.  It stretches from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde, and there is a Batobus stop at its foot.  Even if you are not that into shopping, it is worth stopping in one of the (admittedly slightly overpriced) cafes to watch people go by, and to visit the stunning car showrooms.

“Car showrooms?” I hear you ask.  “Who goes to Paris to buy a car?”  Well, presumably Parisians do.  But that’s not really the point.  The point is that the car showrooms are far more interesting than most of the shops.  The famous Renault showroom, with its café-bar and cool architecture, was closed when I visited.  But the Peugeot   showroom had a neon lit concept car gleaming from its roof and a small exhibition of previous badges and race car, and at Toyota, the concept cars were displayed on the walls as if they were driving up them.  Mercedes Benz rather let the side down with a half hearted display of a car surrounded by flowers, but then I guess if people want a Merc they don’t really need it to be marketed at them to the same extent as someone choosing between a Peugeot or a Fiat.

The Champs Elysee is also home to a number of nice restaurants, which are worthwhile in good weather.  Yes, I know they are tourist traps, and I am well aware of the mark up you pay to eat so centrally.  But the people watching is ace, and I think it is worth it for the experience just once.  I’m reviewing the pizza place we ate at in a separate review.

As well as the expensive stores, there are flagship branches of companies like H&M.  This means that if you buy a new top, and someone complements you on it, you can say “Oh?  This old thing? I brought it back from Paris.”  And no one needs to know you got it in H&M.  Simple pleasures

Pretty and a nice place to see May 02, 2011
The street itself is very beautiful and a nice place to stop when in Paris. I went in the winter time (about the first weekend in December) and it is especially beautiful because all of the trees that surround the street have lights on them. If you continue walking down the street until the end/the opposite of of the Arc de Triomphe there is a sort of "winter bazaar" type area where people are selling different souvenirs at market stalls as well as different food stalls. I personally went at night in order to get the full experience of all the lit up trees and the vendors at the end. Its also in a nice area as there are plenty of places to grab a drink/meal and sit down if desired.
