A Trout fishing trip in Ooty Dec 29, 2010
Ooty is a favourite vacation site, the tallest mountain in the western ghats near Coimbatore,South India.Ooty is now renamed Udhagamandalam and is accessible by air till Coimbatore, is about 60 kms further uphill meant to be traveled by road which is easier rather than by the famed mountain train which is slow and tiring though it takes you along scenic valleys among the mountains.

A lovely place with cold weather conditions and developed into a town by the British it was a one time summer resort for the rich and affluent.Ooty is very crowded now so plan your stay.

Ooty has several places where you can enjoy your stay but safely guarded by anglers is Avalanche waterfalls. If you are adventurous take the help of locals and venture further uphill to the lake above Avalanche where you can do some wonderful trout fishing. It is secluded and beware of being troubled by wild animals like bears, panthers, boars, bisons, elephants and deers.Travel in a crowd, reach early and return before 3 pm because that is the time for the animals.

I had earlier angled several years in Avalanche and on an invitation by a native family went up to the lake above Avalanche.

I was mesmerised by the unspoilt natural beauty of the mountain and the lake. The water was so clean that I could see the size of the Trout hooked to my reel even from a distance. For some excitement study the foot prints of animals and broken branches proving the presence of elephants. This aroused a lot of interest among the adolescents and in myself while it caused some anguish among the women. We did a lot of fishing though, lunched and on seeing the deers arrive were warned of the arrival of the wilder animals. We therefore left early. The shrieking and disturbed chatter of the monkeys hinted the presence of wild animals around and the return up to Avalanche was the most exciting part of travel done by me till date.If you need some advice stick to Avalanche and venture no further especially when you have women and children with you.

Avalanche is good and safe for angling even though it may be crowded.
