Vienna. Home of many puns to do with the word Wiener

We headed next to Vienna.  Getting here involved driving straight from Poland, south through the Czech Republic and into Austria.  It’s strange that the change from one country to the next is more obvious here than almost any we’ve been to.  Almost as soon as you cross the border the roads, houses, shops and scenery change quite abruptly, going from the relatively stark Czech fields to the rolling hills of northern Austria.  We also noted more police than I’ve se...

I don't have much time for this entry as we're about to head off to Budapest (where it's supposed to be 35 degrees.. great... I already feel like an armpit...) and still need to grab a quick bite.  We have some fab pics from our tours around yesterday, but this cafe does not have uploading capabilities, unfortunately. Yesterday, Ev and I woke up bright and early at 8AM and took off for Hallstatt - a gorgeous little town of 900 people that is perched off this huge lake and crawling up th...

We got up this morning and had breakfast at the hotel before going down to the Spanish Riding School.  Lipizanner practice runs from 10 AM until 12 PM, so we were able to take our time and wandered the streets down to the school.  Watching the Lipizanners practice was interesting, particularly after seeing a performance at Schonbrunn Palace the last time I was in Vienna.  However, we only stayed for about half of the session which seemed to a pretty common idea as several other...

Goodbye Salzburg. Hello Hallstatt,We are off to Hallstatt this morning; sitting here at the train station writing this e-mail right now; listening to the recorded messages on the PA system in German. We have some time to kill so I thought I would get in an update on how things are going over here.Last night we went to see the Salzburg Red Bulls play, they won 3-0. The match was great; the fans are so into their football over here. The have a section for the visiting team’s fans and it is al...

After a trip of about 3 hours I got in Wien. Again it was a real pain to find a decent place to sleep. Either it was full, or way too expensive! After a few hours of searching I ended up in a 3* hotel, paying half the price it would normally cost ! :DAgain, Wien was just a place to stay for the night. School was beginning again the next week.

Nestled between some great mountains and placed by a delicious lake is one of my favourite spots in Austria. I've been to Zell several times and it never fails to please. In the winter - its a skiing haven with great snow, plenty of good nearby mountains, buzzing nightlife and some great affordable places to stay and eat. Come in the summer and you'll find plenty of sporting activities to keep you busy.
