as a child, i am always fascinated with mountains: snow capped, barren and forested. before christmas, i have a vacation for a month and me and my friend decided to travel in the alps for a week in austria. it was like a dream come true for me, what would be better to see snow capped mountains than the alps and in early winter?! couldnt be better. so we decided to book a hostel - not bad - for 25+ euros a night incl. early breakfast.    we started at about 12:00 in the afternoon b...

Day 4 After checking out and having breakfast (Me again half an apple, Im just not fit for having breakfast) we went to Karlsplatz again for some shopping and we took some pictures from the city. We walked around and visited a very pretty church we saw on the way. It was a good last day, not too active but just nice. We had lunch and went over to the metro station to get back to the hostel. We had left our luggage there untill we had to go to the airport. At the metro station we say this lit...

I Have Confidence (Ill find my way round Salzburg and spend lots on Christmas Stuff!)

Our last day in Salzburg was spent packing, doing a bit more shopping, doing a bit more eating and enjoying a horse and carriage ride! I was really sad to be leaving Salzburg, and hope to be back soon, perhaps in a summer with Mark? I took my top back to Schops and changed it, but got side tracked into H&M and came away with a jumper, a jacket and two tops, which made packing all the more difficult! I had to put everything breakable into my backpack and slightly sturdier but still fragil...

I've mentioned Schloss Schönbrunn (Royal Castle) before. It's an easy spot to find and get to and is just out of the city a few stops on the underground. It's my favourite tourist attraction in Vienna for a number of reasons. It was originally the summer residence of the royal family and it remains a magical location to this day with some glorious gardens surrounding it. Located in the gardens is the Zoo. It's a great zoo and worth a day or half day if you have the time and like yo...

First destination: Schönbrunn Palace: Architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed this palace. The Emporer Franz Josef I of Austria was born in Schönbrunn in the 19th century. He spent his life there and died (1916) also in the Schönbrunn Palace in his sleeping room. The palace and the Schönbrunn gardens have been the location for a few movies (such as James Bond's "The Living Daylights, the Sissi trilogy, "Marie Antoinette" by Sofia Coppola) Gloriette + Schönbr...

Recently, Gene (genetravelling) who is in Vienna, made a visit to the Museum of Modern Art and the Erwin Wurm exihibit.  He got a couple of very interesting shots while there and shared them with us in his blog.    For those of you who are not familiar with Erwin Wurm, he was born in 1954 in Vienna, Austria. I guess you could say that he is a modern artist who thinks well out the conventional box.  He doesn’t work with paint and brush, but with ideas and thoughts that...

I can't really say enough about how lovely Salzburg is... it's the kind of European destination you picture in your head when you think of the quaint, picturesque representations you may have seen on biscuit tins when you were young. Having been to Vienna, I had no idea that Salzburg would be so different... traditional looking, pretty and very welcoming. OK, so I admit that I also loved that fact that everywhere we went it was like stepping into a scene from The Sound of Music and that my ...

Serfaus, Austria

This was our first 'real' ski vacation and I was full of anticipation.  Our friends had picked out this place because of its reputation as a family ski area with a very good ski school for kids as well as a large children's village.  Serfaus lies in the Austrian Tirol mountains east of  St. Anton and west of Innsbruck.  The ski area which consists of Serfaus, Fiss and Landis has 185 kilometers of pistes with 53 lifts and is covered on one pass...

They say to get to the airport three hours early for international flights, and well, we were flying to Frankfurt, so we got to the airport three hours early (more like 2 1/2 hours).  We got all checked in and wandered to our gate and then we realized we weren't on an international flight!  We were flying to Detroit first!  Silly us!  What to do?  We rode the tram on C concourse a few times back and forth and then sat at the Itasca Bar (or something like that) over ne...

When I last left you, I was very tired, but very happy to be in Vienna. The same is true on both counts now, but today, I have stories to tell. On our first day in Vienna, the group had class and then 2 visits in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the hotel we were to have our class in thought we were an Italian group of around 20 people and seemed a little shocked when 48 of us walked into the tiny lobby. Things were quickly worked out and class began, I was the powerpoint operator for the cl...

I arrived in Vienna, via Frankfurt, at about 11pm local time on the 3rd.  Lufthansa had lost my luggage, but promised to have it to me by today at noon.  They did give me a toiletries kit anda plain white t-shirt -- so at least I had a toothbrush!  My hotel is the Bristol, a Westin operated hotel right on the Kartner Ring.  It is just off one of the main streets of Vienna (or Wien locally), KartnerStrasse.  I got up early on the 4th, as I only had one day to see Vienn...

For the most part let the pictures do the talking.  Today was a day to wander the streets of Vienna.  I walked past the State Opera House, went through the Hofburg and a few of the museums there.  Grabbed some lunch at a cafe along Stephansplatz and watched the rest of the travellers and businessmen go about their daily activities.  There is so much to do here that a single day is simply not enough time and a return visit at some time in the future is a must.
