Having criticised the Russian embassy thinking no western country could possibly be so inept, we met an Australian girl in the embassy area who was rather distraught. Her bag was snatched in Krabi by a motorbike and had her passport in. She came back to Bangkok to get a new one and they said her Thai visa would need 10 days left on it to get a new passport! It didnt, so instead they are issuing a 7 month temporary passport which basically means thats the end of her trip. Passports need a 6 month validity when entering a country.

I've never heard such things and when i needed a new passport in Estonia the British embassy issued it within 24 hours. A Danish and Israeli friend had their bag stolen in Koh Phangan and they got new passports in a few days. Don't know which embassies have similar pathetic rules to the Russians and Aussies, but i cant believe a stolen bag can lead to this much trouble, truly incredible.
They'll send you straight back h...

Sad story. Though I never had my passport stolen on my trips, I did once need the Dutch Embassey in Auckland, NZ, and they were pretty useless as well. Basically they wouldn't help me after I was robbed of all my money, ATM card, credit card *and* ticket stolen while buying said ticket at a travel agency. So you are correct in your observation that an embassey does not look after its citizens. Only if you happen to die or something.

As for Australian embasseys, I had to go to my Chilean girlfriend's family for an emergency, which voided my working visa, and they refused to issue me a new one. This meant I was not allowed to return to my job in Sydney, nor did I get my tax refund which you are normally entitled to if you stay in Oz for less than a year.

Bureaucracy - OOH - what is it good for, absolutely nothing - say it again.

Too true. I was nearly robbed by street kids in Manila, but i loved it there anyway. Ive been assaulted in England twice, but id never call it dangerous. These things happen all over the World and its just a fact of life. People who are too scared to go somewhere because they heard a bad story need to snap out of it. You need to form your own opinions and although i am happy to tell people where i liked most, i hopefully always get across the fact that its merely my opinion. You cant be running scared your whole life after all!!
