Why do they call the Blue Mountains blue?
posted by:
Aug 29, 2007
Hi All, today it was another beautiful, crispy clear day in the Blue Mountains.  By the way, do you know why they are called the Blue Mountains?  Because when you look at them on a sunny day you can see a blue haze hanging over them, and this is created by the eucalyptus oil that is released into the air from the hundreds and thousands of eucalyptus trees we have over here.  You can see this blue haze in the pics I've posted. This is how it is all the time up here, u…

Arrival in Sydney
posted by:
Oct 05, 2006 - Oct 10, 2006
Dragged myself out of bed and Bucket gave me a lift to the airport.  Just in time too - almost missed the flight.  Still numb from the night before (which only ended a few hours earlier) I survived the 1.5 hr trip to Sydney and then successfully stayed awake long enough to get my connecting flight back home to London.  Success!!

Merry Beach - the best kept secret...
posted by:
Aug 29, 2007
Okay all, I'm going to let you in on a great little secret.  Merry beach is the place to visit if you're ever in the south coast of NSW.  Just about 40 mins south of Ulladulla lies a most unspoilt belt of beaches, starting with my favourite, Merry beach. Backing into national park, Merry beach has a permanent caravan park/camping ground, and you can also rent some very nice cabins for a few days and pamper yourself while enjoying the pristine nature around you.  But that's not…

Memories of Central Australia
posted by:
Aug 29, 2007
It's such a fantastic sunny and warm day today in the mountains that I was reminded of our holiday, 2 years ago, to Central Australia. Hubby and I flew into Alice Springs and then travelled through the desert to Kings Canyon and onto Uluru.  I didn't attempt the climb to Ayers Rock this time - and in fact the climb was closed due to the high temperatures.  It was baking hot in the desert.  However, we did manage to climb Kings Canyon, even though it was a very hot day.  T…

Memorable quotes from the trip..

As compiled by Whitney during the trip..   Meg’s flatulent ducks in Seam Reap. “Isn’t it a bad idea to feed ducks bread? Don’t they get, like, flatulent or something? HAHA! Can you just imagine it!!? These flatulent ducks zooming across their pond by the sheer force of the wind being expelled from their behinds!? Like an external motor.. ZOOOOOOOM!” James, Siem Reap, about 5am: *muttering to himself* “We’re going to see a lot of Battam Bangers.. hehehehe!!” Ja…

Bendigo is my hometown. It is also the start to the first of a series of future travel episodes in the whiparound series that I'm producing. You can find out more at www.whiparound.com.au My partner Tony and I decided to travel the Wimmera Mallee area because we had not been there before and it is not far from home. The trip went fantastically.

Fiji Cruise 2007: Sydney Travel Photos
posted by:
Aug 26, 2007 - Sep 12, 2007
after a very long trip from Rome we get to Nadi (Viti Levu) where we start a combination of three cruises (3,4 and 7 days) for 2 weeks in the Yasawa and North-eastern Islands. A small ship (Cpt. Cook cruises), not so many passengers (30-70), great crew, very nice and different travel companions (some trouble with thei accents...) and really warm and oen local villagers. Weather at times problematic (wind, waves, rain) but mostly good. Very relaxing. Beautiful undersea scenery!

We are off!
posted by:

Mostly uneventful morning, this year, no tins of blue paint were spilt. David drove us to Peter Neve's place and then he in turn, drove us to Sutherland. The train made an emergency stop just outside of Oatley station which caused some angst but when the train moved again soon after, I breathed again... Today is freezing in Sydney, makes you glad to leave... It is actually colder in Sydney (9oC) than Paris (15oC). We fended off the queue jumpers at the check-in counter and got great seats…

Booked Accommodation in Hong Kong
posted by:

While the movers were in today packing up our place (I'm moving to Sydney, drive down tomorrow, gear is going into storage until mum/I get back from this trip) I was looking for a place to stay while we are in Kowloon, Hong Kong.Using a couple of sites (Asia Rooms, Hotel Club) I've found a good deal staying at the Mayfair Garden Hotel. It is pretty central and right next to the MTR and Airport Shuttle stops. According to the reviews the rooms aren't very big, but really the rooms in Hong Kong…
