buying a car in australia

if you wanna see real australia (and, i mean not only the paved roads ;-) ) and see places others dont, you really have to buy or rent a 4wd. but as soon as you spend more than approximatly 12 weeks in down under it's cheaper to buy a car (and re-sell it again) than to rent one. i bought a - quite old but still in good condition - toyota hilux with a diesel engine.but, if you plan to buy a car - u should at least plan one week for buying and another week for selling the car. to be sure tha...

A Strange Brew
posted by:
Feb 28, 2008 - May 14, 2008
I'd been in Railway Square YHA for over a week at this point and I'd been going more and more insane with each passing day. I'd gone to Travellers Xpress, an agency especially for Working Holiday Makers (particularly the British), helping them find office jobs during their stay. I filled in the forms, submitted my CV and had a brief interview. They said it may take as long as two weeks to get work. They weren't joking...I also signed up with a website called Travellers At Work, and actually h...

G'Day all,This is just a  journal entry to share my travels and talk about Australia with you, and to how I ended up where I am today. I guess because I have lived in Australia for most of my life, I never really took many photos or kept a travel journal. But I’ll do my best to tell my story. I could talk about Australia for hours, so I hope this blog is not to boring for you.I love Nature and  wildlife and even more I love the ocean. I like being in the Great outdoors. Camping, o...

Ok I'll be honest I knew nothing about Heron Island before this trip. It's the typical dilemma of knowing and dreaming of foreign lands and not appreciating what is in your backyard. The only reason I've had the chance to go here, was due to my brothers advice. He was coming back to Australia for a wedding, and wanted a holiday whilst he was back for a month. I desperately needed a holiday bad. (Especially since my last one was over 19 months ago when I did the Trans-Siberian). So he said we ...

Australia... FINALLY!
posted by:
Jan 03, 2006 - Jan 19, 2006
Today I went white-water rafting on the Tully River.  My raft (Team F-Yeah) consisted of me, Louise (Aussie), Kristy (NY), Adam (UK), Andrew and Craig (Canadians) and our Kiwi guide Sunny.  The river had huge rapids and we flipped our boat several times.  I have so many bruises, cuts and scrapes and a horrible sunburn but it was worth it! Tonight we went out to the Woolshed for dinned and to dance.  They encourage you to dance on the tables and even have ledges clos...

I'm all packed. Farewell to Mike and Alana, and here's to re-seeing them again soon. I take an early bus to the airport for my early flight. All is peaceful. I hate leaving a country I feel a part of. So far this has only happened to me in Korea and Nepal outside of Perth. I board the plane. We take off and I take my final glance out the window, saying goodbye to the land of the morning calm again. In Singapore, I find I have a slight delay and get online to discover Winnie propp...

Coming off the flight I had to keep my adrenaline in check.  Knowing I probably had about an hour before I'd make it through the final arrival gates and see my sisters I was trying hard to swallow the butterflies in my chest. Waiting in the long queues at customs I decided to see if my UK prepay sim worked here in Oz, surprisingly it did.  So I called Baby Jen to see if they made it to the airport to meet me.  I was relieved that they did and felt a little dumb for thi...

Reminiscing about The Ashes!
posted by:
Feb 25, 2006 - Jul 31, 2006
Saturday 22nd April Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! I finally arrived in the land of Bruce and Sheila, of venomous animals, the former island of convicts and has-been cricketers. I landed early in the morning and deliberated about having a look around Brisbane before my connecting flight to Cairns later on, but decided to crash out in the airport instead for a few hours. I checked into the Virgin Blue airport lounge for the worthwhile sum of $5 (2 quid) and spent most of the day sleeping, watch...

Watering the vegetable garden when Andrew messages me to tell me that he and the cocker spaniel have walked out to the headland and there are many whales playing in the bay.  I hop into the car and drive down and as soon as I arrive see several breaching all along the coast!  There are calves and adults and the youngsters seem to be full of the joys of life and are leaping out of the Pacific Ocean as they are heading southwards to the waters of the Antarctic.  After ...

Football Weekend and my hero. Saved by a little old lady from the big bad Hawk supporter

I travel to Melbourne at least 2-3 times a year mainly to watch the footy and to do a bit of shopping and each time I go back I love it more and more. If I didn't live in Perth then Melbourne would def be the city I'd want to live in.   This particular trip my brother and I went to Melbourne for a weekend of football, with a bit of shopping for me and partying for him. Our teams (Hawthorn, him and Carlton, me) were playing watch other at the Telstra Dome. I was hopeful that this trip ...

Skydiving For The First Time
posted by:
Mar 22, 2008
The night before we did the skydive, I decided to stay at Andrew's place and uploaded some of the photos I've taken during my city tour the other day.  My friend Nick went back to the seaside restaurant to meet the Canadian waitress, whom he had a 'moment' with while we were having dinner.  I took the key from him because I thought I might use it in case I wanted to go out and grab something from 7-11, which is just one block away from Andrew's place at St. ...
