Eating in Austin Oct 15, 2016
The bar gets raised a bit when your dining choice has an address on Sixth Street in Austin. That may have unfairly prejudiced my meal at Austin Ale house, because there honestly was nothing to complain about. At the same time I was not amazed and delighted because everything was simply ‘okay’. Suppose I should return at night to sample some of the tap action, since that is what the joint is named for, after all (and the entrance brands the establishment as a ‘gastropub’).

Among the positives, a very spacious restaurant with an equally expansive menu. Of course it is quality, not quantity which dictates virtue, but if my choice of migas was any indication, then the Ale House is a winner. Migas (pronouned MEE-guz) are a breakfast staple throughout Texas and it was my good fortune to see them on the brunch menu, which was offered until 4PM. I love migas: a mix of scrambled eggs, cheese, onions, jalapenos and tomatoes over corn tortillas. Austin Ale house served them up right, accompanying the main attraction with black beans, potatoes, guacamole and salsa. Perfection only required a dash of tabasco, which was standard on every table top in the restaurant.

The eatery features some nice interior decoration, though again the local competition diminishes the impact – just too much cool stuff here in Austin. Service was fine, though you sensed there was no pride in representing the restaurant (unlike the 1886 Café I had visited earlier in the day). It was just a job and even though service was satisfactory, the lack of enthusiasm somehow earns demerits in Austin.

This sounds like more of a decent chain restaurant location than a special local place.

Augh...seems like no photos may be uploaded on Saturday? I've run into this consistently, but of course this is convenient day to post --- and this morning I cursed after entering the review because I knew what destiny awaited, and it held true! Usually okay to throw them up on Sunday, so hopefully soon...
