Fourth generation puppeteer Feb 04, 2017
There are many puppet shows throughout Myanmar but Aung's Marionette Puppet Show should be the one to choose as he is a third generation puppeteer and his puppets are more than 40 years old, and used to belong to his grandfather. Shows start at 7pm and 8.30 pm everyday of the week and cost a few thousand Kyat ( i cannot remember the exact amount). Before the show starts this charming man will engage you in conversation regarding puppetry, give you tea, and there is a bowl of candies where you can help yourself. He also sells puppets should you be interested in buying one. Aung supports his family with his business. His great grandfather, grandfather and father were all licensed by the state to continue this Burmese tradition. Aung began his puppetry shows in 1985 and is one of only 8 licensed puppeteers in the whole country. Shows last 30 minutes and each different puppet dance/show is from a different legend and there are 12 different tales that are performed by the puppets. Aung rushes back and forth behind the stage dangling and moving the puppet strings and when he is finished he will come down to meet the guests who watched the show. He will be sweating and out of breath as it is very hard work. Getting a license is very expensive and one can only do so in Yangon. The puppets are expensive too.

Most puppet shows that are advertised in Myanmar are not the real deal, just someone dangling a puppet on some strings and paying over $10 as some tourists don't know the difference between traditional puppetry and tourist shows.
