Fantastic Little Hotel close to the centre Apr 03, 2015
The hotel located 300 meters from the harbour so it is handy if you arrived in Bergen city by cruise ship like me, just walk if you do not have big luggage. Hotel has big sign at it is building and easy to find even without gps.

Hotel is in the town centre and it is around five minutes’ walk to the Fish Market, restaurants, harbour, and other beautiful sights in town. Information centre is located on the top floor of the Fish Market if you need to buy a Bergen city pass which is handy and cheaper if you plan to explore the museums and other sights.

The hotel reception was very friendly, informative, and the check in was fast and easy. Free city map provided at the hotel. My room was located at the fourth floor and there are two elevators available at two different stops.

The room was simple in decor and on the small side, however it has everything I need with private bathroom and all the toiletries. There is a table, chair and armchair and a television which only seemed to have Norwegian channels. The shower work very well with hot and cold water but it was very basic bathroom and very small. We stayed 2 nights here and the cleaner clean the room and change the towel daily without us asking it which was great.

There are two single beds push together inside the room and I feel not much room to move around inside. The bed was comfortable and it felt very warm inside the room, since there were no air condition, only heater available, but nothing complain here since outside weather was cold. There is a wine bottle and some snacks inside the room which can be eaten or drink with a fee. It was reasonable quite at night time and I can sleep well since I could not hear the traffic noise from the room even though the hotel building was located right at the busy street.

The best part of the hotel was the free breakfast which is buffet and plenty of choice especially of cold dishes which served at the breakfast room, I do not remember if the hotel serve warm dishes or not. And the fantastic free waffles with strawberry jam and cream every day at three pm at the guest lounge, which you have to make your own and free tea or coffee 24 hours with a proper coffee machine which make a very good cappuccino. Oh boy…. I enjoy my afternoon tea at this place and it was all free. Beware, plenty of hotel guests enjoy the free waffle so you need to queue for it and sometimes it is a very long queue, but it is worth it. The waffle was delicious.

There is hotel restaurant at the back of the building, unfortunately it was a closed day when I enquiry for lunch.

I would highly recommend this place and I would definitely be back to this place if I visit Bergen again.

The hotel is located right down at the old harbor in Bergen just on the other side of the famous Hanseatic houses. It is a short walk from the main square of Bergen from where you can catch a bus to or from the airport and a 10 minutes’ walk from Hurtig Ruten boat terminal if you use the hotel as a base before or after a cruise up along the fjords of Norway. Hence the location is pretty much within easy walking distance from any major attraction in Bergen.

The check-in at the hotel is fairly quick and we get a hotel on the fourth floor - there is two elevators going up and they are a bit strange - with two different stops for third floor in one of them. I guess it has something to do with the original construction of the buildings of the hotel - I think it is two different buildings which has been joined together to make a bigger hotel. Hence the floors are not at the exact same level - hence the different stops at the third floor. Fortunately the elevators don’t confuse us too much so we can easily find the room.

The room has what you would expect for a hotel with the beds, a table, chair and armchair and a television which only seemed to have Norwegian channels which isn’t as bad as it might sound since most series and movies will be in their original - usually English - language so foreign visitors can still follow the shows.

A special feature of the hotel is found in the lobby - there are free coffee and tea at any time of the day. In addition to the free hot drinks they do have a special waffle time between 4 and 6 in the afternoon when you can make your own waffles. After a day of exploring outside in temperatures not much about freezing these little features is actually quite nice. Unfortunately I am not the only one attracted to this feature - a lot of guest like it - hence there can be a long queue especially in the beginning of the waffles session. Unfortunately there is only one machine for the waffle and to bake them probably takes a while - especially the first couple of waffles since the machine need to warm up probably to bake the waffles. After a bit the baking speed will pick up and the waffle dove is quickly being depleted - but the staff is pretty good at refilling repeatedly when the waffle has been made.

The breakfast at the hotel is also good. The breakfast consists of mainly a lot of different cold meats and cheese of which at least a large selection is local Norwegian produce. In addition to the wide cold selection they do cook some scrambled eggs with various meats as a companion - one day is some strange sausage and potato combination while the second breakfast is the traditional fried bacon to go along with the eggs.
