Though the youth hostel isn't exactly in the centre, its definitely not out in the sticks.It is a bit of a walk from the train station mind, if you have a big backpack (or maybe I'm wussy). The staff were friendly and helpful and the hostel was clean and seemed safe. Unfortunately we ended up staying the same time as a French school trip and a cadet unit so it was a bit loud, but c'est la vie.
The rooms are generally dorms with varying numbers of bunk beds-and they don't tend to be too cramped. Some even have toilets en suite. Pleasantly, the kitchen was well stocked with equipment, helping you to avoid eating out. There was also a TV room with videos available.
The hostel does offer bike rental, and this is a great option- there are a series of routes set up around Namur for walking and cycling. Get a copy of two of the map before you set out, take any drink or food you want with you, and set off. The longer routes definitely require a mountain bike, quite good fitness and a dollop of bravery (the routes aren't always what one might call, cycle friendly). The hostel will lease you a 'mountain bike' (actually a mountain bike frame with road bike wheels) for a reasonable price.
