Auberge de Grand Popo Reviews
A colonial place at the beach Apr 17, 2011
Auberge Grand Popo consists of several colonial buildings located directly on the beach. Very nice if you are there for the beach, but far away from everything else. There are also a few bungalows in the garden. The pool was small and not very inviting.
We got a room in the larges building. The room had shutters instead of windows and had simple furniture. We had one single bed and one double bed, both with mosquito nets, but with very worn down mattresses. It was very little light in the room and impossible to read in the evenings. There was no AC, just a fan, which even on full speed hardly had any effect. It was extremely hot in the room. The cleaning needs to be improved. IT was quite dusty there.
The bathroom was very basic, no amenities and only cold water. There was no bathroom door and the shower was visible from all over the room. This is very uncomfortable when you share with a stranger. No matter where in the room you were, you could look straight at the shower, which gave you no privacy at all. When one of us showered the other one left the room.
The restaurant was nice and airy on an open terrace overlooking the beach. In the evening there was live music. The menu was good and they had a good wine selection. The only problem with the wine menu was that they had run out of most of it. The dinner was okay, but served in a strange order. Some of us got the main dish and then the starter, while others were served the dessert while some still were eating their main dish.
Breakfast was always served late. Every morning it seemed like we arrived as a surprise to them. When we were supposed to have breakfast they hadn´t even started setting the tables. When it was served, it was pretty dull. Only white bread, butter and jam, and tea/coffee. Orange juice was served after we had finished and were ready to leave.
Auberge Grand Popo could have been a great place, but they have a few things they need to improve.
