Auberge camping La Tradition Jan 11, 2017
So we arrived to Merzouga with the overnight bus from Fes. Ride was alright but be ready and bring some warm clothes because nights over Atlas Mountains are cold. Bus dropped us on the city some 20km from Merzouga so we jumped into the gran taxi and acquired about places to stay and to take tour over the dunes. Of course taxi driver took us to his cousin place and we struck the deal with Auberge camping La Tradition. The main building/hotel is newly made and geared solely towards tourists. It is just a huge waste space that nomad Bedouins placed as a fake Kasbah. No one really leaves there. Only few boys and one older guy that runs the show. It is the last building before the dunes of Merzouga start. They hold bunch of camels and they have this operation that takes people on the tour to see the sunset from the dunes, sleep at the “Bedouin camp” and then come back in the morning.

This hotel that they have is used so that people can have breakfast and quick shower before you go to your next destination.

Room was not bad at all. Mud walls with large beds that take all the space. Bathroom is totally fine for the desert. Actually you can call it luxurious because it has running water and hot shower… in the desert… not bad.

There is internet in the main hall where food is served. It is not on the best side, but better than expected. They serve mint tea at all times, and it is legendary / fantastic tea that everyone enjoys in. Breakfast is alright. Not good, but alright. They don’t serve any Bedouin stuff, just what they buy in the store and place in the front of you.

I was confused with the fact that we did not see any women or girls around. They are probably in some other place that this people call home. I did not like this place, its energy, or what they did for our money. It is total tourist trap and only thing they are interested in is your money. After you pay they lose interest in you in every way. All guys speak a bit of English and you can communicate with them on basic level. They can make some food for you if you order in advance.

Town is kind of close to this place, but walking on the sand in the sun is not my favorite pastime. They can take you there by car but you’ll be left off to the store of their friend or cousin or something like that… Once we went, the guy took us to the store on the outskirts of the town and we got hustled until decided to just go out and find our way to the center.

Anyway, I don’t recommend this place, and suggest to book your place online before you get there so you can avoid hustling and trickery. That way you’ll get the alright price for what you want to do and see and all offer will be listed.
