The auberge in the dessert they called Sahara Dec 31, 2010
The Auberge Sahara is located at the end of a turnoff from the main road in Merzourga. There is not much to see in the city - hence the only reason anybody goes to this place is to enjoy the amazing dessert scenery just outside the wall around the auberge.

The Sahara isn’t close to the central parts of the village - but let’s face it if you go here you don’t go for the city living but for the dessert just outside the door.

If you stay here you will either need your own ride or take a taxi to go to the Sahara. I am not sure if there is actually an address for this place - but you don’t really need to know the specific address to find it. You can just follow the sign from the main street saying Auberge Sahara and you will get to the entrance to the place after a short ride over a somewhat bumpy road.

If you are staying here you probably want to eat at the restaurant and the food is quite good Moroccan food. You can buy water and soft drinks a trusty bar at reasonable prices - but there is no alcohol sold at the premises - but the people running the place don’t mind if you bring your own wine or beer. After the dinner you might be able to catch some entertainment by some of the local’s performers working for tips.

Breakfast is served in the same restaurant where you get the dinner - but if you like you can take your food out to sit and eat at the outside tables. If you are having a very early start it might be a bit chilly during the winter time but the sun will quickly warm you up when it gets up.

There is a swimming pool - which around New Year time got very cold water inside so I didn’t really use it much but during the hot time of the year it must be great for a swim to cool down from the heat.

You can go up on the roof of the building which is highly recommended since you can get a fabulous view of the sand dunes from up there - of course it cannot replace a walk out in the dunes but it is still nice for a quick view of the dessert. You can just talk a walk out in the dunes and back to the Sahara - which is nice for sunrise. If you want you can organize an overnight camel trip into the dunes where you’ll stay in a Bedouin camp starting from the Sahara and returning you fairly early the next day so you can have your breakfast in the luxury of the hotel instead of the sand in the dessert.

Much to my surprise this places actually got internet. You can use one computer for a small fee and they actually got free Wi-Fi with a stable and fairly fast connection - nothing you would expect of a place far out in the dessert.

For an Auberge, it was a great. Not that I have had any experience with staying in an Auberge before, but it was still great. I liked that there was an option of a double and a single in the room, because, thankfully I was rooming with my mother but we both slept in the double bed to stay warm at night. It was so cold that night, I appreciated every wooly, itchy blanket that was on top of me.

Other than having to deal with the extreme heat difference verses day and night. The food we had for dinner and breakfast was decent enough to enjoy for at least 2 nights and the scenery and lounges were great for relaxing.

If I were to head to Merzouga again, I would definitely stay here again.
