Atse Yohannes hotel Mekele Reviews
Budget favourite, great place to meet Danakil travellers Oct 09, 2014
The Atse Yohannes hotel is situated at a big square near the Yohannes IV museum (former palace) and Lucy Park. There is a restaurant at the first floor. This looks a bit empty most of the times. So a better option is to sit at the balcony of the bar and order your food there. You have a nice view over the square and many people sit there to have a drink. The waiters were very friendly and helpful, the food is good. Try the Ethiopian dishes like Injira, or treat yourself with the crispy pizza after the Danakil Depression.
The hotel is basic, but cheap (12 dollar and 1,5 for the breakfast). The rooms are big, have a balcony and have their own boiler for hot water and if you are lucky you have a room with a view on the palace. My room even had a view on the palace when I was in the shower:-)
In some rooms there was no hot water. The small TV has only local channels.
Wifi and computer is free available at the second floor (at the second reception where you have also leave the key). But it's not very fast. You can't sent pics, that takes ages.
They started to renovate the left half of the building, so in a year or two there will be newer rooms.
Breakfast is typical for tourist in Ethiopia: bread, omlet, jam, coffe or tea. The coffee is always spilled on the dish. But later I understood that it's tradition to fill up the cup to the max.
Hotels in Ethiopia do not respond on emails, you have to call them if you want to make a reservation. Most people just arrive and arrange a room. The reception and entrance is at the back of the building, just right from the stairs to the first floor.
