Atmore Overview

Atmore is a town of about 10,200 (up 33% since 2000) located along US Highway 31, and near Interstate 65, in Escambia County in Southern Alabama not far from the border with Florida. Atmore began as a stop along the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad and was called Williams Station. Not long after that it was decided to name the town "Carney" after a prominent local businessman who owned a sawmill in town. However, Carney's brother had already helped establish a town nearby and that one was named Carney. The town decided to let their Mr. Carney name the town and he named it "Atmore" after his friend C. P. Atmore a General Passenger Agent for another railroad. Atmore was incorporated in 1907. The Poarch Creek Tribe has its headquarters here in Atmore. Boxer Evander Holyfield and Paul Birch the original "Marlboro Man" are from Atmore. Atmore has a nice little historic district with a few buildings of historic and/or architectural interest. Seemed like a decent town.
